Hi! My name is Destiny and I live in Indiana. I have had an ever expanding passion and love for skunks since I was a kid. I have not adopted one yet as I don't think I'm qualified enough. I would love to hear any advice you have to give as to adopting skunks. Or even just a cute story. I absolutely adore skunks and always have. It has been my dream to have a special bond with one of my own. I am not looking to get one for another couple years as it would break my heart to not care for it properly due to lack of knowledge. I've been researching domestic skunk ownership for about a year now. Absolutely ANYTHING you would be able to tell me about skunk ownership is warmly welcomed and encouraged. When I feel I am well equipped, I will be adopting a baby to create that special bond early on. Whatever advice you have to offer is appreciated, because like I said before, I want to know as much as I can so I can take care of my future best friend properly. And give him/her the best life I can. And thanks so much for allowing me to be a part of this group/community, I've read through conversations and learned much more than any website has taught me already.
Thanks!

Welcome Destiny. You are doing the right thing by researching first. Too many skunks have to be re-homed because the owner skipped that step. They found out after they got the skunk that it wasn't what they had expected.
I believe a permit is required in IN so check with your DNR for any and all requirements that must be met to get the permit. Also, how long it will take because you will need to have it prior to baby season (June) of the year you plan to get the skunk.
Next start looking for a Vet who has some experience with skunks as you will need one. This is another important step some people skip. The time to find a Vet is before you need one. If you have an emergency, the skunk may die while you are making phone calls. The first year mortality rate is very for kits so I recommend having a back up or emergency Vet too, if possible.
Feel free to ask questions. I have had skunks more than 35 years and sometimes give the condensed version. If you don't understand, just ask again.
The benefit of the forum is there is a number of people to jump in. If one solution doesn't work, someone else may have one that will work for you.

I'm so happy and grateful I was able to find this group, I've read through some conversations and everyone is so nice and helpful. It's amazing. I can't wait to learn from the people on here. I'm excited and want to know as much as I can. Or even just stories about yours. If anyone thinks of something they did as a new owner that did not work well with the skunk or did or any advice please please please let me know! I'd love to listen
