So very sorry to hear of the passing of both furbabies. We always say that at least they knew love for the time they were with us. I know it's hard but if you can share anything as to the reasons why it's always appreciated. Vets are not given a lot of info so many times what they know is from us and the sharing of info....it also gives us more to be aware of.

Relentless had congestive heart failure. Probably because of my ignorance to skunks special needs diet. I never gave her any supplements ( taurine) But it also could of been genetic. She was on lasix for 6 months before she passed.
Did you know that you can get lasix in cream form that can be put on behind their ear? Lasix is a medication that helps to remove water from lungs when they fill up. It dehydrates the animal. her heart was weak and couldn't pump out the water.
Sakari was a sad, sad situation. She developed a fungal , bacterial infection on her front paws. by the time i noticed it was a problem and not just baby food caked on her paws it went septic and she had to be put down. Horrible, horrible. I felt so guilty for not catching it sooner. The antibiotics didnt work. Im forever haunted by that one.....

I am trying to study (its very hard) microbiology to figure out what exactly the fungus was and what was the proper treatment. Sakari would not let anyone examine her feet closely. The topical treatment the vet gave me was impossible to put on. The medicated baths with miconazole did work but the problem was already septic by the time i did this.  I am still looking for the proper medication that i can give orally or subcutaneously if i come across this again.

Hi Farmgirl3c. What is the last name to use for Relentless and Sakari so I can add them to the memorial?

Getting the skunk diet down is difficult for many people and sometimes CHF happens even when the diet is good. I was not aware that lasix comes in a cream. I prefer not to use drugs with mine that have heart issues unless there is no other option. I have found they actually live much longer when I give supplements to support the heart. I currently have two skunks going on 3 years with a heart condition. Unfortunately, when you find out after it has advanced, there are less options. Skunks are great at hiding things until they can't.
I have never come across a fungal infection that went septic. How awful to lose one that young! The mortality rate is high the first year in skunks. Seems like it doesn't take much to kill them when they are young.

Reilly has been added to the memorial. He certainly wasn't a quitter!

Also Jessie Nolan (6.5) and Mia Sofia Bean (8.5) are added.
