I rescued two baby skunks. Their eyes weren’t even open. A friend took one, I took the other. Trying to find a vet to tend to them, I was informed that it’s illegal in Texas to keep a skunk as a pet. Too late for me, as I’ve already bonded with her, and she with me! Well, the vet I called, turned me into the game warden, who gave me 24 hours to surrender my baby.

I did as I was instructed. But I’d love for a licensed rehabber to take her for educational purposes. The though of releasing her, only to be shot like her mother, really upsets me. Anyone know of someone in Texas?

In my opinion I would say screw them take him over to your friend's house or a relative and tell them you released him back into the wild wait a month give them a chance to stop over and ask to search let them walk then don't take him back to a vet ever

Unfortunately I’m afraid your baby has probably already been put down[frown]
For some reason Fish and Game are completely against people rescuing Raccoons, Skunks, Foxes etc. due to the possibility of them having rabies. It’s unfair and ludicrous but it’s the law. It’s surprising that the vet turned you in. They aren’t legally obligated to turn people in for rescuing wildlife so he did that on his own. If I were you I’d go in there and give him a piece of my mind. Loudly!!
If I were you I would join my local wildlife rehab organization so you can legally save and then release these incredibly wonderful animals. That way you’ll have the vet care you need and a group of people to help and support you.
